Trackers ยท guide
Check your practice website for trackers in five minutes
You need a browser and nothing else. The method below is what our scanner does, done by hand, and it answers the only question that matters on a practice site: which scripts load on the page where somebody books an appointment or fills in a form. Expect it to take five minutes for one page and fifteen for a whole site.
1. Open the page that matters, not the home page
Go to your booking, appointment-request, contact or new-patient-forms page. A tracker on the home page is ordinary; the same script on a page whose address says /book-an-appointment/ reports that address, and the address says what the visit was about. Our scans of 362 practice sites found a tracker on such a page on 111 of the 245sites that run Google Analytics, so this is the common case, not the rare one.
2. View the page source
Press Ctrl+U on Windows, Cmd+Option+Uon a Mac. A page of code opens. Nothing here changes your site; you are reading, not editing.
3. Search for these strings
Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F) and try each in turn. One match is enough; the script is on that page.
| Search for | What it is | Kind |
|---|---|---|
| googletagmanager.com/gtag/js or G- | Google Analytics | analytics |
| googletagmanager.com/gtm.js or GTM- | Google Tag Manager | analytics |
| AW- or googleadservices.com/pagead/conversion | Google Ads conversion tag | advertising or behavioural |
| connect.facebook.net or fbevents.js | Meta Pixel | advertising or behavioural |
| clarity.ms/tag or clarity("set" | Microsoft Clarity | advertising or behavioural |
| callrail.com or swap.js | CallRail call tracking | analytics |
| static.hotjar.com or fullstory.com | Hotjar, FullStory (session recorders) | advertising or behavioural |
| analytics.tiktok.com or snap.licdn.com | TikTok Pixel, LinkedIn Insight | advertising or behavioural |
The kind column is the one that decides what to do next. Analytics on a booking page is worth moving; an advertising or behavioural script on a booking page is worth removing, and it is the finding that grades a site F in ourrubric.
4. If you found GTM-, look inside the container
A match on GTM- means Google Tag Manager is on the page. Tag Manager is a container: the scripts inside it do not appear in the page source at all, so a page that shows only the container can still be loading a Meta Pixel and three other tags. Open https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtm.js?id=GTM-XXXXXXXwith your container ID in place of the X's, and search that text for the same strings as step 3. It is long and unreadable, and the search still works.
5. The network tab catches what the source hides
Some scripts are added after the page loads, by another script. PressF12, open the Network tab, reload the booking page, and type facebook, google, clarity orhotjar into the filter box. Every row that appears is a request your visitor's browser made to that company from that page. This is the view that settles it; the page source is the quick version.
What to do with what you found
- Each tracker page under /trackers/ says how the script usually got there and how to remove it on WordPress, Tag Manager, Wix and Squarespace.
- Most of it is a settings change your web person can make in an afternoon. Send them the page addresses and the strings that matched; that is the whole brief.
- After the change, repeat steps 1 to 3 in a private window. Caches keep serving the old page for a while.
What we are not saying
This guide says how to find a script and what it does. It does not say what having it means for a particular practice's obligations. TagQuiet performs technical assessments and is not a law firm; that question is for your counsel.
The same check, run for you
The free scan does steps 1 to 5 across up to 25 pages of your site, reads inside the Tag Manager container, and emails you every script by page in about ten minutes. No call follows unless you ask for one. Counts on this page: latest scan per practice across 362 sites as of 2026-10-08.
